The goal, a box retailer that is a call for quality design at low prices, was not evident in their store design, commissioned Target Tower. The concept store presented by Belzburg Architects is an attempt to re-engineer the urban retail experience. The residential tower looming above is an expression of how density drives the best market. The store itself spreads out in an undulating fashion with rises, falls and merges to create a more naturalized effect. Multiple design scales are intended to bring mass and density to the city while still providing an accessible exterior that doesn’t overwhelm the neighborhood. This concept – rebranding the look, creating high design principles with integrated sustainable practices takes recent developments in Wal-Mart retail stores and adds a distinctive architectural narrative.
Daylight in the store is added with large perimeter windows and slivers of skylights though the bulk of the building. The perimeter is also sized to meet street level, creating a more accessible storefront. The residential tower is even more radical with its use of “fashionable skin”, a finished system that can be arranged for various subjects and samples. Using the forms of mass production that can be rebuilt to ensure individuality, the concept of a sign of modern retail sales and borrowed to create the leading elements of the facade. The envelope serves as multiple functions outside of its distinguishing form. As a shade device, the skin wraps around the balconies to protect the interior from the inflow of heat. Built in sunny batteries provide optimal solar expulsion for energy production. A simple system formed in different ways can create multiple views, destroying samples to add complexity to the visual language of the building.
